New Delhi: With the elevation of Chief Justice Aravind Kumar to the Supreme Court, Justice Sonia G Gokani is set to become the first woman judge to helm affairs at the Gujarat High Court in 63 years of its existence.
The Central government on Friday notified the appointment of Justice Gokani as as Acting Chief Justice. She is likely to take charge of the office from Monday (February 13), after Justice Kumar takes oath as a judge of the apex court.
Justice Gokani’s name was recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium on Thursday. She is currently the senior-most judge of the Gujarat High Court.
She will serve as Acting Chief Justice only for a fortnight, as she retires on February 25.
Justice Gokani joined the judiciary directly in the cadre of district judges on July 10, 1995. She was elevated as an additional judge of the Gujarat High Court on February 17, 2011 and made permanent on January 28, 2013.
