New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday took exception to the directions passed by the Telangana High Court imposing restrictions on the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) while questioning Kadapa Member of Parliament (MP) YS Avinash Reddy in a murder case.
A Bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha stayed the High Court’s directions that the questions put to him by the CBI be in printed form and circulated in advance, and that the interrogation be taped.
“What kind of order is this by the High Court? Atrocious order. Unacceptable,” the apex court remarked.
The High Court had passed these directions while hearing the anticipatory bail application of YS Avinash Reddy in connection with the probe into the YS Vivekananda Reddy murder case. YS Avinash Reddy is cousin of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy.
Sunita Narredy, daughter of the deceased, challenged the High Court order before the Supreme Court.
In its order, the apex court sought the response of Avinash Reddy in the matter, and stayed further proceedings in the case before the High Court.
However, Avinash Reddy was granted protection from arrest by the CBI till the next date of hearing, which is on Monday, April 24.
The petitioner before the top court had stated that the order under challenge had effectively derailed the probe, which as per the apex court’s earlier orders, had to be completed by April 30 this year.
The MP had never cooperated with the probe agency to be entitled to any protection, it was urged.
Counsel for the CBI at today’s hearing pointed out that the bail applicant had coerced some officials into saying that he had a heart attack, to avoid interrogations.
