Culcutta: It is the duty of lawyers to protect courts and judges, Calcutta High Court’s acting Chief Justice (ACJ) TS Sivagnanam said on Saturday while speaking to the bar members of the Alipurduar district which is slated to get a new six-storeyed building to house the District Court.
The ACJ Sivagnanam also said that lawyers should treat judiciary like their mother and it will bring them dignity.
“Consider the district judiciary as your mother. She will treat you with dignity. It is your duty to protect the courts because you cannot practice law on the banks of river Ganga. You need courts, therefore, you will have to protect courts, judges, the judiciary and in turn you will get the reward and you will flourish in this profession,” the ACJ said.
Justice Sivagnanam was speaking at the stone laying ceremony of the new integrated court complex in the newly bifurcated Alipurduar district.
The judge assured the lawyers that the bifurcation of the new judicial district would not in any manner affect their profession.
“I have seen in my career so far, whenever there is a bifurcation of a judicial district, lawyers of that district apprehend that their work would be affected. They think with new district new lawyers will take up their briefs and they will not find cases anymore. That isn’t the case. I can say that with every new such bifrucation, I have only seen lawyers flourishing in the field. So let’s not apprehend anything like this,” the ACJ advised.
ACJ Sivagnanam further pointed out that since most of the downtrodden communities reside in the Alipurduar district, it is the duty of the lawyers to ensure that the rights of such people are protected.
The event was attended by State’s law minister Moloy Ghatak and Justice Ravi Krishan Kapur of the Calcutta High Court, who is the guardian judge for Jalpaiguri district, which has now been divided into Alipurduar district, judicially.
