Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, Manish Sisodia moved the Supreme Court on Tuesday challenging his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the alleged Delhi Excise Policy scam.
The matter was mentioned before Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud by Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi at 10.30 am for urgent listing.
“You have other remedies Under Section 482 Code of Criminal Procedure,” the CJI said.
“But in the Vinod Dua case such a plea was heard. It can be listed today end of the board or tomorrow,” Singhvi said.
The CJI said that he we will hear the case at 3.50 pm today.
A Delhi court had, on Monday, remanded Sisodia to CBI custody till March 4 in the case after he was arrested on Sunday evening in connection with the 2021 Excise policy.
Sisodia was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) after an interrogation that lasted nearly eight hours.
It has been alleged that Sisodia and other members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) granted liquor licenses to certain traders in exchange for bribes.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) and CBI registered cases in relation to the alleged scam after Delhi Lieutenant Governor (LG) VK Saxena recommended a CBI probe based on a report by the Delhi Chief Secretary. The report claimed that the Deputy Chief Minister violated statutory provisions and notified a policy that had significant financial implications.
Although Sisodia was not named in the CBI’s chargesheet, the probe remained open against him and some others. The AAP has denied the allegations and maintained that Sisodia is innocent.
